Once Upon An Alpine Mountain Bench

Once upon an alpine mountain bench there was a boy. This boy had a grandpa. Grandpa had guns.

While attending a semiannual luncheon (in honor of LDS General Conference) at Grandpa Skip's house yesterday, Xavier discovered a wonderful perk to being a nature loving Republican. As you may know, Republicans take very seriously their right to bear and raise arms, and will use any excuse to shoot at both animate and inanimate objects for sport. As a non-gun toting Repub myself, the thought never occured to me that Xavier would be interested in Grandpa's arsenal, let alone dream of future membership in the NRA. I guess this is another genetic trait that skips a generation. Good thing Xavier's grandpa is well-equipped to teach his youngins all about the exciting world of shooting soda cans off of a cardboard target with hand drawn face...

...and although I did not take a picture of the hand drawn face, there was something oddly reminiscent of a speaker of the house we all know...and mentally use as target practice from time to time.

Sizing up the competition

Bring on the ammo!

Learning the proper technique

Fire! Xavier, full of enthusiam for his new found sport, had a difficult time taming that excitable trigger finger of his. Instead of waiting for the normal "ready" and "aim" commands, he fired as soon as the gun was cocked. Grandpa was patient enough to work with X on his form.

Success! Xavier proved a quick study as he knocked three cans off the target! He was extremely pleased with himself and gave Grandpa a good chuckle.

One happy boy!

Each time Xavier sees the picture above, he exclaims, "That's my gun!" I gently remind him, "Xavier, those are Grandpa's guns and you can only use them while at Grandpa's house. If you want a gun of your own, you will have to take it up with Santa." On second thought, before this backfires in my face, here's hoping the man in red's neck is a little less red than his suit. We don't want a loaded weapon and Grammy in the same house...
